Speaker Biography

Hendrik Baird is a South African author, researcher, and creative practitioner with more than thirty years of experience across the performing arts, media, and cultural industries. He is co-founder and director of Baird Media, a podcast production company based in Pretoria, and a first-year PhD candidate in Digital Culture and Media at the University of Pretoria, where his research examines the political economy of podcast monetisation among independent creators in the Global South. He holds an MA in Journalism and Media Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand and undergraduate degrees in Drama from the University of Pretoria. He is the author of three books on podcasting, a contributor to a Routledge academic volume on radio in South Africa, and a two-time finalist in the RSG/ATKV Radiodramaskryfkompetisie. His work has been recognised with the Muse Award for Best New Media Script, a Bronze Award at the South African Podcast Awards, and the Feather Award for Best Media.
